[1] Humphrey carries union-heavy Ohio, but still falls short of the margin needed to win. In Ohio, Oregon and Pennsylvania, the Democratic candidates hang on by their fingernails (OTL: John Gilligan who carried 48.5%, Wayne Morse 49.8%, Joe Clark 45.8%). Joseph S. Clark served as the Senator from Pennsylvania through 1980, when he became Robert Kennedy’s ambassador to the Court of St. James. Clark was replaced by Pittsburgh Mayor Pete Flaherty. I really, really doubt that RFK living and Humphrey doing slightly better in Pennsylania (which he carried anyway in OTL) is going to be enough to save Clark, who lost in OTL by 250,000 votes. Clark had angered hunters by supporting strong gun-control laws, and Italian-Americans by having allegedly slurred  Michael Musmanno in Musmanno's 1964 campaign for the Democratic US Senate nomination against the Clark-supported Genevieve Blatt. [1] (Musmanno unsuccessfully appealed to the courts after having lost the primary by only 491 votes, and Blatt, partly because the court battle largely exhausted her resources, and partly because of Italian-American resentment, went on to lose to Republican Senator Hugh Scott in the general election, despite the LBJ landslide in Pennsylvania.  The fact that Musmanno died, appropriately, [2] on Columbus Day in 1968 helped rekindle Italian-American anger at Clark.)  Granted, Clark's backing McGovern in OTL over Humphrey helped to sour the Philadelphia and Pittsburgh Democratic machines on him, and with RFK backing Humphrey, they might have been a little less bitter, but I still don't see them being enthusiastic about an aristocratic WASP left- liberal. Moreoever, Schweicker was a strong opponent

assigned a race riot at the Republican convention for no apparent reason Uh, that's actually historically sourced, as I pointed out before. It appears by similar de_script_ion in *Miami and the Siege of Chicago* *The Glory and the Dream* and *Nixonland.* Why can't I find a reference to Edward Brooke being excluded from a reception at the Miami convention in the latter two books? I can't search _The Glory and the Dream_ on Google Books, but Brooke's name appears only nine times in _Nixonland_ and never in _Miami_. I don't have Manchester's book with me but what he wrote was apparently Senator Edward W. Brooke was *reportedly* barred from a reception because he was a Negro. (my emphasis) http://books.google.com/books?um=1&q=%22barred+from+a+reception%22 I have no idea who reported this or whether in fact it was true (I doubt it, because if there was any proof that it did indeed happen I would think there would be more references on the Web and in the books I have read about 1968). As for the actual Liberty City, Miami race riot of 1968 (which killed four people) I remember it well

Especially since Clark's political career had been _base_d on opposition to the Philly machine. However, with less Italian-American anger at Clark due to Musmanno being elected, is it possible that Clark might be able to pull it off in '68? Moreoever, Schweicker was a strong opponent

Given the close margin in that primary, it seems quite plausible that Judge Musmanno could win it - let's say 500 more Musmanno supporters turn up to the polls and he wins the primary. Actually, the easiest way for Musmanno to win the primary is not to have David Roberts run
